7 Top Tips to Successful Business List Building

One of the best ways to get leads for internet traffic is from using targeted Internet Traffic List Building techniques, no matter what niche you operate in.

The 7 Top Tips

1. What is List Building

It is a powerful strategy where you build your own list of subscribers to create a mutually beneficial relationship. You provide knowledge and practical solutions to their challenges, and they help you by becoming loyal subscribers who spread your message and buy your offers.

2. What are you promoting?

What you decide to promote relates to either your passions or more importantly, what will make you money. Look to the markets that are popular and then drill down to find focused niches within the top level niche. Examples:

i. Dog => Dog Training => Dog Training basics

ii. Internet => Internet Marketing => Internet Marketing Strategy

3. Quality Content

The success of your list building activities depends on your attention grabbing headlines and quality content within the main copywriting body. This alerts and holds your readers’ attention when you explain what you provide, and how you can solve their challenges.

The more relevant your information is to them, the higher the view and open rates of your emails and articles. This will lead to increased click through rates (CTR), downloads and orders.

4. Who will you promote it to?

As the author/marketer, choose the methods that will benefit you the most, whilst also providing quality service to your customers and your promotional partners. Examples:

i. Single activity promotions:

Article Marketing submissions to sites such as Article Base, ArticleBliss.

ii. Group activity promotions:

List Swapping with other marketers who have lsubscribers that are responsive to your offers.

iii. A combination of i. and ii. above.

5. Free or Paid?

The majority of internet marketers like to offer both. Free or very cheap offers acts as a ‘loss-leader’ to build up the traffic and list, while the paid promotions are where the real money is made from your paying customers. The offer price can be increased depending on the quality and value of your promotions.

6. Will your List like Your Offer(s)

Once they see that you are promoting paid products or services, they may choose to ignore your offers or even unsubscribe to your future mailings/list. This is a positive reaction from them.

You’ll have to develop a thick-skin during this process. Depending on your business model, their unsubscribing paves the way for paying subscribers who will see the value and benefit in what you provide to develop their knowledge and build their own businesses.

7. Activity

This activity should be conducted at least once a day, depending on your promotions.

I have been on some lists where the same marketer emails 3–5 times per day. I view this as excessive as I receive information overload. Unless I like what I receive or even respect the marketer, then I may choose to step back from, delete or unsubscribe from their lists.

Depending on your niche and customers, ideally, mailing out to your list about 2-3 times per week is deemed acceptable, without becoming intrusive or overwhelming to them.

8. Bonus Tip: T-R-R.

Test, Review and Repeat the above steps!

Always test your promotions and enjoy the whole process as this will come across in your communications.

To your continual success!

  1. Hi Valerie :)

Good article. I totally agree with you about information overload – almost invariably it causes me to unsubscribe.

  3. Very useful content, thanks Valerie. I'd be interested to hear more from you on the topic of 'subject lines' as I find that this is one of the hardest things to get right and get your open rate to increase.

  5. Hi iamemily,

    Thanks for your reply.

I understand your concern and agree with you.

Briefly, it really depends on what your intentions are for writing your email initially, and what you are doing now with your current emails/email campaign.

    Example:

    1. Are you giving an opinion/review on something and/or are you peaking your readers interest to pitch to them and so make a sale?

    2. “Split-Testing” your subject line content to what you’re sending to your readers to convert them to sign-ups/buyers.

As in Step 8 of the 7 Top Tips above, constantly testing, reviewing and monitoring the process will improve your results where you can look to maximise them financially.

    Kind regards,
    Valerie.

  6. Thanks Valerie for taking the time to answer my post.

For this particular client we are offering them discounts on take away food. I am split testing the subject line with the next campaign so will see what results this gets.

I have read quite a few articles that contradict each other in regards to 'buzz' words not to use in a subject line like free & discount. I guess my own testing will prove what works to our audience, but as always am looking for a definitive, quick fix answer : )

I look forward to see what works best actually, I'm not usually a stats geek but get quite interested in this.

Thanks again for your help and advice
