Babs' introductory post

Well I have to admit that I’m not quite sure of my place amongst the “Birds”. Whether as a business bod that’s been at it for a while, or as someone working from home, or as a working mum doing the whole juggling bit (striving to build a business that will enable retirement before she gets too far past it!), or sharing my Internet-related expertise – WordPress, marketing strategy, etc… Most likely you’ll get a mix of the above plus some other topics that I feel the need to share – while always hoping to be informative/amusing/comment-encouraging/at least worth the time you spend reading me!

There are a few things about which I have quite firm ideas and that I’d love to help move forwards somehow: improving remote working and collaborations, and encouraging more local collaborations – I see potential everywhere and almost want to shake people sometimes – business life could be a lot easier if we trusted a bit more and took a default “helpful” setting – if we all did that, we wouldn’t have to be so wary of being ripped-off somehow.  And of course it’s that last bit that stops us; for that perhaps we just have to put some firm safeguards in place.  A couple of times this year I’ve done work for which I’ve not been paid – more fool me and perhaps I’ll be more careful about being quite so free with my trust on a future project that would be more painful to my bank balance and business (my wonderful Pollyanna point-of-view finding the “glad”).

I’m definitely looking ahead from having made some pretty fundamental mistakes (when do we stop making them, is what I want to know!) and learning from them in a very pro-active way. I’m 46 and do not want to still have to be working in 20 years time!

Rather than complaining and feeling let down by bad stuff happening in business (and in life), there is likely to be a valuable lesson to learn, if nothing else. Move onwards and upwards!

And what would you like to hear about, from the “Birds”? Here you have a group of strong, independent, honest women who are not afraid to foist offer their opinions to the world! Just think what you could do with that… (and tell us!)

    Thanks, Sarah

And Katherine – goodness – there’s a whole book on that. After one business going under I wanted to write on “the pitstops and pitfalls of a small business”! And even this past year has seen more errors of judgement than I want to be making – but times change – these are tough times for everyone.

I firmly believe that we do have to find the positive lesson in each problem/cock-up though and allocate sufficient time to put in place the structures needed to avoid such in the future.

Perhaps a fresh conversation blog later in the month for some of these – I’m all for sharing mistakes so that it may just help another avoid the same.

Did I miss this? Ok silly question I did miss it. Well put Babs, I do like the bit where the Birds get to “offer” their opinions..

It is true though re: doing work for free, you do learn as you go along. Someone came across my blog and asked if I could travel to Suffolk and give a talk and stated they had no budget! The old me would have gone anyway but I said thanks for asking me but I can’t afford the time no the travel costs!

I think this is something that more of us are waking up to, Ida – we cannot do stuff that is actually going to cost us – whether our time or money – unless we can afford that. Simple!
