Book Review: How to Write Winning Non-Fiction
Added by Babs on April 14, 2010
You will not believe the relief I felt on reading fellow Bird’s book, Suze St Maur’s “How to Write Winning Non-fiction: The Complete Writing and Publishing Handbook for Non-fiction Authors
“, to find that it is genuinely good. When I offered to do the review it was on the understanding that it would be an honest and impartial opinion, and part of me was dreading the time it would take me to write a kind, selective post. Thankfully this has flowed as the book is essential reading and recommended for anyone with a non-fiction book inside of them.
It is indeed a “…Complete Writing and Publishing Handbook for Non-Fiction Authors“.

If you’ve a yen to write a non-fiction book, for whatever reason, or if the idea has even flittered across your mind – this book will provide you with everything you want to know about considering publication. The comprehensive advice is not just for printed books either, it can be applied to ebooks too.
Suze knows what she’s talking about, having written over 20 non-fiction books herself, on a range of subjects. She is honest about her own experiences, and her style is as if she’s chatting with you over coffee about how to approach your own book. It’s encouraging while also very down to earth.
What you will learn:
- What every non-fiction book needs to be successful
- How to get a good idea and how to turn it into a winning idea
- Why so many books get started but not finished
- How to plan your book so writing it is fast, painless and easy
- Alternative publishing options and when you should pursue them
- How to pitch your book to mainstream publishers
- What happens from proposal to acceptance, to contract and beyond
- How to devise a winning title for your non-fiction book
- The mechanics for writing a book and meeting your obligations
- When to get in outside help and how to find it.
The above is taken from the back cover and I make no apologies for that as it really does tell you what you can learn from the book. I would thoroughly recommend it and will be making thorough use of the guidance myself. This is one of those books that will not gather dust on the “must read” pile!

You should nag me on my Nappy Lady Guide to Cloth Nappies, Suze. Once a month, just a gentle nudge…
It is a fab book, both Kev and I read it and found it really useful. If you have seen any improvement in my writing at all, it's down to the book
It's very useful for bloggers, particularly those who write about service things like I do
