Three small words that I hear many times a day, I imagine most of us use them at certain times. Three small words that we will never hear from an amazing and inspirational young man, Matt Howes. If you are a Radio 1xtra follower then this name will be all to familiar with yourself but for those that are not familiar I shall explain.
Matt Howes is a local Norfolk boy who has always had ambition and drive, who spent time working as a sales consultant whilst trying to launch his career in the world of music. Matt has always shown a stubbornness and belief in himself and his abilities; this was proven when he took the ambitious leap from DJ in Norwich to become resident DJ in Malia, Greece, playing for thousands of partygoers.
To most people looking in, Matt had a charmed life – he’s a good looking, honest young man who was following his passion, and just living life to the full. Yet Matt hadn’t faced his biggest challenge yet: on the 4th July 2011 Matt was involved in a serious road accident whilst in Malia – an accident that changed his life forever.
Matt lost his right arm, but gained an inner strength and belief which has led to him opening a great many doors. Since his accident I have been following his progress on Twitter and in the local news and it has made me realise that the words “can’t,” “shan’t” and “won’t” are just abbreviations for the words “no self belief.”
Matt has made me and thousands of others realise that if you want something, no matter what the odds you need to just go for it. When people first found out about the accident initial thoughts ranged from: “oh god, poor guy” to “he had such a great career ahead of him, such a shame”.
These thoughts obviously did not enter Matt’s head.
1 week after the accident he was DJ-ing in his resident club in Malia.
And within weeks Matt had posted a picture on Twitter of a crisp packet folded into a tiny triangle (some of you may have this habit after eating your crisps) – amazingly it was Matt’s crisp packet, folded using his feet and left arm. I can’t even fold it with two hands. It was this point that made me realise he was going to be more than alright.
He had proved me right; his life is moving in a fabulous direction and at a rapid pace. He has built a close relationship with Tim Westwood, he jams with DJ Q and MC Bonez and has been co-signed by Westwood himself. He has residencies for Decorus, and will be performing in a number of countries during the summer months.
Matt always was a strong young man with a promising future. Now through his own making Matt is a true inspiration to many.
The next time you are about to use the words “can’t,” “shan’t” and “won’t” – grab yourselves a packet of crisps and fold that triangle……….

I’m not a nasty person. I’ve never in my life deliberately set out to hurt someone, or cause them pain. But right now, and for the past three or four years, on and off, my thoughts have been filled with fantasies of revenge. Now I have the opportunity, and I can’t decide what to do. [...]
Charlotte, thank you for sharing your blog and what an inspiration in Matthew. I got goosebumps reading. I have had some recent trials in my family with my daughters mental health and she is the same, nothing stops her!! We need to learn from these youngsters and go for it! Be confident to the world even if inside we are terrified…..you have really my mind for the day!! Thank you to you and Matthew x bless him
