One of the biggest factors I think in the rise of twitter as a marketing tool has been it’s ease of use. It’s so easy to use that even Paris Hilton can use it, along with Britney Spears and Ashton Kutcher.
The fact you can tweet photo’s, video and music makes it a multimedia experience, where you can hold conversations, recommend people and crowd source suppliers.
But Twitter has a darker side, where people do the most silliest of things and think it doesn’t matter.
Like Paul Chambers, the angry guy who was prosecuted when he was frustrated with an airport closure and made a comment about it.
The comment was picked up by airport security and he was prosecuted, given a criminal record as well. (More on the Jack of Kent blog)
Then we have John Prescott (you know, Mr Abolish-the-Lords-dismantle-peerages-WAIT-oh-look-I-am-a-Lord-now-don’t-bother) who encouraged people to commit pay per click fraud by retweeting (effectively endorsing) a Labour party voter’s suggestion to 18,500 followers. (More on that, if you missed it here). Prescott’s family were dismissive of the suggestion of wrong doing - it was only a tweet… tell that to Paul Chambers.
Clare Balding rallied a heap of support via twitter after having no redress in traditional media after being called a “Dyke on a Bike” by AA Gill, unluckily for Gill a lot of people agreed with Clare (We all need a voice). I believe we are still waiting for him to apologise to Clare.
But Paris Hilton tops it all.
She tweets about a new handbag -
and says – Love my new Chanel purse I got today
Next thing you know, her and her bag are in the news. Cocaine.
And Paris denies the handbag is hers… yes, I believe she called it cheap. Well she’s had it since 15th of July, she’s fed up with it now.
Now the law must count for everyone and I really can’t believe that someone who likes to live their life in the spotlight doesn’t understand that firstly people will search down evidence to support their truth, and secondly that her denial is worth more than an actual tweet she posted.
She takes drugs, allegedly, a lot of people do. Why pretend she doesn’t? A simple test of hair will show when she last took cocaine. Is she worried about something else? Her fans? Her family? her businesses? then surely she would have took time to make sure she tweeted things that didn’t get her in trouble. More importantly perhaps she should have said “no comment” and waited for her lawyer. Even better would have been not to have taken the drugs in the first place.
Celebrities are human beings with human foibles, and twitter is showing them how they really are…
Is that a good thing?

Personally what Paris Hilton sniffs, smokes, injects or buys is of absolutely no interest to me, but what p*sses me off bigtime is the fact that she seems to get away with murder, almost. And on the one occasion when she was jailed for a few days she turned herself into the rent-a-martyr of all time.
What message does that send out to younger people? That if you’re rich you can do/consume what you want and you’ll get away with it?
With our social media facilitating such frequent and random disclosures from anyone – particularly celebrities – who feel like setting up and shouting whatever they want (e.g. the “Robin Hood Airport” tweet) we’re making it easier and easier for utter nitwits to freak out entire communities – nay, countries or continents even.
Am I being a boring old fart by denigrating Paris Hilton and all her silly little friends for making a mockery of real life?
And in any case, I thought that Chanel clutch bag was perfectly hideous.
Twitter: SuzeStMWrites
Yes, the bag is perfectly hideous, maybe Karl Lagerfeld set her up for saying she loved the bag and sending his sales plummeting <—-joke, not internet rumour.
As your Facebook friends are saying, Paris, Kate Moss et al only seem to appeal to the fashion world. They are not very popular in real life, that doesn't make you boring, it makes you in tune with 99% of the population.

Other than having to listen to their babble, I think it is a good thing. Forward-thinking celebrities embrace the opportunity to directly interact with the public. Celebrities that are worth hearing gain from the opportunity/exposure, and those that aren’t get what they deserve.
p.s. I agree with Suzan’s concern that Paris seems to get by with almost anything. Sadly, she is not the only one. I guess that’s what they mean by the golden “rules” (aka, those who have the gold make all the rules).
Ah, the golden rules… we should have grown out of them as society gets better. Sadly it seems money still talks.
Of course it does, Sarah. The son of a friend of mine got into a fight at his prep school. Who started it or what it was about was not relevant – the other boy’s father was a rich foreigner with lots of clout amongst other parents. He insisted my friend’s son was expelled or he would tell everyone to withdraw their children from the school. Needless to say, Joe was immediately expelled.
That is disgusting, I would like to think if I had that kind of money I would behave responsibly with it. At the least it blackmail at the worst it’s moral corruption, and if Paris Hilton grew up in a similar environment, she’d have the same attitude. Oh, wait – she has, throw the book at her and show her how the law works.
I love Twitter, and as you say, used correctly it can produce amazing results. I have learned a great deal from people I have met on Twitter and my best reward has been to get involved in a scheme helping internally displace refugees in central Uganda through folk I met on Twitter.
As for Paris Hilton well what can I say? She appears to get away with all manner of things bu ultimately she is only damaging herself from a health point of view
