Polio – yes polio still exists. Poliomyelitis or infantile paralysis, is an acute viral infectious disease spread from person to person.
Polio is a contagious, historically devastating disease that was virtually eliminated from the Western hemisphere in the second half of the 20th century. Although polio has plagued humans since ancient times, its most extensive outbreak occurred in the first half of the 1900s before the vaccination, created by Jonas Salk, became widely available in 1955.
At the height of the polio epidemic in 1952, nearly 60,000 cases with more than 3,000 deaths were reported in the United States alone. However, with widespread vaccination, wild-type polio, or polio occurring through natural infection, was eliminated from the United States by 1979 and the Western hemisphere by 1991.
Focus on the Crocus is a healthy, fun, community based, environmental friendly way to plant in everyone’s mind, the opportunity of being part of a historic worldwide campaign, spearheaded by Rotary International, to finally eradicate Polio across the world … and an excuse to have a party afterwards, get a certificate of participation and generally enjoy the life we are giving others.
The Ruby Giant ‘purple’ crocus represents the dye colour dabbed on children’s little ‘pinkie’ finger to indicate they have been immunised against polio in the few remaining parts of the globe since Rotary International commenced its campaign in 1985.
* Mankind has a unique opportunity to free the World from the horror of polio and
now is the time.
* In 1988 polio was rife in 125 countries – it remains in 5 countries and it’s now in our power to eradicate it.
* International Rotary has joined with the World Health Organisation, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and others worldwide to help wipe out polio once and for all.
* A mass vaccination programme is happening in these remaining countries and International Rotary have pledged to raise $200 million by June 30th 2012 – so the big push is on!
Look out for local Rotary initiatives.
For example, in my local area Haywards Heath Rotary want to create a purple center for the town of Hayward Heath. The official planting of over 60,000 bulbs will take place at Muster Green- on Saturday 2nd October.
So The Rotary Club of Haywards Heath, invite you to take part and sponsor one square metre of Ruby Giant crocuses to make this wonderful lifetime display possible AND to help eradicate Polio.
£50 is all you need to sponsor one square metre of Ruby Giant crocuses. Sponsorship contributions go directly to help inoculate children in Polio affected countries.
To make a donation and contribute to a plot, please pledge your support and contribute to this unique opportunity.
