Girl toys (no, not that kind…!)

A look at the stuff that us ladies like to have about us – kitchenalia, cannot-live-without gadgetry that lives happily in a cupboard, genuinely useful items that can indeed make life easier, and dare I suggest, cushions!

Ok, perhaps not cushions…

If something gives us pleasure, then is that a bad thing? In my kitchen, for instance, I have three different colanders – I only need one, but the others look good! There are jugs galore, old glass jelly moulds and bottles with coloured water in them placed to catch the sunshine of an evening – all things that are there for aesthetic reasons rather than practical. And when my kitchen is tidy – not often, but it has been known, I feel such pride and enjoy a big smile every time I walk in. I feel like the domestic goddess I yearn to be. And as I’m now single again, I can satisfy my own desire for bright, eclectic “stuff” – much of which is oddly complimented by my ex when he collects the kids, but which he would not have approved of in our marital home! Hmmm…

Anyway – back to some girl toys! I was going to focus on some girl geek gadgets but to be honest that was just too overwhelming, so I’ve brought those into this post and we can explore our favourite gadgets and toys together.

Now I suppose there are some very obvious choices to include here – the love bullet that vibrates to music, either ambient or plugged in to your iPod, etc. Or perhaps the bra with Internet connection. An environmentally friendly wind-up vibrator (really!).

But I thought I’d have a browse in the I Want One of Those website – always a treat! A few items that caught my eye include a Messless Gadget Charge Kit (useful for multi-mobile households, I should think), a miniature Henry the Hoover for one’s desk (tempting for keyboards, I must admit), and a tray for making space invader shaped ice cubes (now that is pretty geeky, but life’s too short for such frivolities).

I think my favourite idea was the Bungee Bird Feeder – how funny would it be to have a few of these a-dangling from the branches!

Though I may just cheat and put together my own mould and instead treat myself to the AeroPress Coffee Maker for those times when my trusty espresso machine is not to hand (my favourite gadget ever – that I’m willing to share, anyway…)

What are your favourite gadgets? Or what gadgets do you wish would be invented?

  1. Tis funny Babs, but while I have all manner of computer gadgets and geekery, the kitchen is fairly bare and minimalist save for a Dualit toaster and a Waring blender. Mostly I use forks or spatulas to mix, chop things etc, have one colander and save the dollars for Apple geekery that is practical and well used.

  2. I have to confess, I am hooked on kitchen gadgets. The ones that get used over and over though, do tend to be fairly simple ones. The big forks for lifting a roast. The microplane grater. The jam thermometer. The little hand whisk. So I'm not talking weird and wonderful garlic crushers (what's wrong with a knife?) or a thing to core and spiral pineapples.

  3. oh my a bungee bird feeder, not only does it feed the birds it will keep the cats and the kids entertained for hours!

I love gadgets, but I enforced a ban on buying them 4 years ago after one of the babies tried to eat one of the gobstoppers from my gumball machine!

  4. I love my electric can opener… my bread maker, am thinking about making some Jam in it, or a banana loaf, with walnut just as soon as I find an idiot proof recipe :)

  5. Cheese and onion bread, or walnut and red onion is lovely. Not keen on cooked bananas…

Oh, and I do love my jelly strainer too – a very silly contraption of red wire and mesh bag – allthough it has caused a lot of mess when I managed to drop the big bag full of cooked blackberries right into the pan I was straining it into!

  6. My favourite gadgets. Hmm. Surprisingly they are usually very cheap and simple things. I have long handled dust pan and brush that is the best in the world because the handle flexes enough to get under things. I have a ginger grate that looks like a chees parer without the slit with little hooks all over it. It makes a puree of ginger and galangal in seconds and garlic in to cream. My favourite expensive gadget is my big professional Chefs Choice knife sharpener. It's the only gadget allowed to sit permanently on my worktop.
