Happy being a misfit

I’ve always been a bit of a misfit when it comes to life. Back in India, I could never really fit the stereo type of the high achieving, society succumbing, docile girl I was expected to be.

When everyone else was rushing to be a doctor or lawyer or simply get settled – I was getting my rush from finding and writing stories. While a lot of my peers were seeking jobs abroad, I knew that India was my home and thought it was always going to be so.

But love has its own way of doing things, so when I found myself in sunny…er… cold England with no family or friends (apart from my new husband), no career and no understanding of the English culture – I found myself back on familiar misfit territory.

11 years on and now even in my working life; it’s still pretty much the same. Working for a corporate but thinking for myself is a funny old place to be. But it’s not a bad place to be either. I’ve found; there’s a certain charm about not fitting in.

For one, you always know where you stand and it’s not ‘in with the crowd’. You always have to think for yourself – so creativity and innovation come naturally. You have to survive, so you learn to be tough and finally, you end up finding and being yourself.

So with two kids, no childcare and a full time job – setting up my own weekend business –seemed a natural fit for a natural misfit like me.

Welcome to my world…..as I hope to share the ramblings, ranting and lessons learned from being me

  1. I love India – which part are you from? I’ve only ever been to Goa but I’d love to see more.

  6. I know how you feel Bian – I have always been a misfit and always will be!

Being on the outside can feel isolating and sometimes lonely, but I agree with everything you say about eventually finding that you can be comfortable with who you are on your own terms – and no matter what anyone else thinks or says.

And anyway, why would you want to be just one of the crowd?! An anthem for our fellow misfits: “I’d Rather be Anything But Ordinary Please” – Avril Lavigne. ;)

  8. Thanks Elaine!

I think being individualistic helps in tremendously in business anyway- do you agree? Based on your own experience?

  10. Hi Bian,

I have always been a misfit, my mum thinks I was born in the wrong era lol

But I think as you gradually get older, you begin to appreciate your individuality more, as youth brings the impression that you have to be one of the crowd, something that my youth work has shown over the years can be a source of huge confusion, when trying to find your place in the world.

I am glad to be an individual, and great to see you and Elaine embracing your wonderful individuality, I think you are both rather special :)

Looking forward to reading your other posts.

  13. Wow .. how very honest. I relate a LOT to feeling like a misfit. So many things have HAD to happen in my life, but the people you think will utterly understand often disappoint hugely and don't … while the people you think wouldn't care either way surprise you as they step up to the challenge and support like mad …
