I heart my Flip

I have never been very good at telling anyone other than my kids how much I love them. So the fact that I love my Flip and I am making a public declaration is a big thing! :-)

Camera’s have never been my ‘thing’ as I have said before I have very little patience and want everything immediately, if not sooner :-)

I don’t take a very good photo and I sound like a toddler on helium on a good day! So last September in a meeting with Bian Salins I was asked if I had a use for a Flip Camcorder. My instant answer was no, I have no use for it.

Then it was demonstrated to me, point click, record.

Flip out the USB click some options, and 5 minutes later you have a video ready to be added to the site of your choice. I fell in love in that instant. I could see a thousand uses for it right there and then, unlike the trusty faithful mini camcorder that has been gathering dust for the last 4 years and still have 29 minutes of the original 30 minute tape left…

And now, I have one.
I keep my Flip Camcorder in my coat pocket or in my bag, as it fits there easily;  that way I can take it everywhere. I find it very useful for ‘interviews’ with clients whom I’m meeting up with for business. I find that if I’m in a cafe with a bit of background noise, that it doesn’t seem to pick that noise up. Not only that, the sound is clear when you play the clip back :-) .

The love affair continues…
Of course, you’ll find that after my meeting with an unsuspecting friend or acquaintance  that as soon as walk through the front door I am on the laptop plugging the USB and away I go! Loading interviews up on to my laptop and then on to Youtube… and then into a blog post in minutes. Google loves video I am told, and yes, it does :-)

As you can see that I have recently uploaded a fab video of Shaun Gisbourne, our first video blog and I was thrilled with the outcome and Shaun does exceptionally well with 4 minutes notice and no script – what a talent he has! What a pain I am when I have the flip, I just have to use it.

As well as recording and uploading all the little family things that I previously wouldn’t bother with, I have started to record little snippets for my blogs, a minute here, a minute there. One I recorded of my stepdad talking about his Rottadors sold 5 of them… it gave the puppies the edge over a text advert – the customer could see what the dog looked like :-) I have two training ones that I send to new drivers for our business. Other companies use a handbook, so do we, but now they get a disc as well showing them what we expect from them.

I should also add, they are not professional videos and they are not home videos, the Flip is the bridge between them and it’s the gadget that finally persuaded my husband that he snored on the odd occasion, so its a marriage saver as well :-)

Over to you, if you had a Flip, what would you video for your business?

  3. As a video producer, my first reaction when seeing them was to fear them, I now embrace them…

Why?? well not only do they provide me with an opportunity in the B2C arena but they also are starting to get people thinking about using video more.

That’s always a good thing because what starts off as a home made thing may well bring forth ideas of doing things more professionally.

Who knows perhaps I will even offer a day’s course on getting the most of your flip – would you come on it Sarah? Nikki?

    • I’d be there in a heartbeat Jay. You are absolutely right, embrace them because they are sparking the interest.

  12. handy stuff…. i dont have a need for it but useful to have one in case.

for example when i broke my fave mobile, i chose the current one based on its camera, it has a 5mp cam which means i can capture a scene easily instead of having a heavy camera and lose a good picture….

    love the blog, s
