I’m a sucker for a stray…

As anyone who has met any of my boyfriends will surely know ;) (only joking S, well partly at least)

But even I was amazed on a recent trip out for lunch. Off we pop to one of our favourite restaurants, the Relais du Romelaëre, near to us in Clairmarais. S’s children are with us and we often nip in for Sunday lunch as the food is great, well priced, and Patrice and Sonia are fab company (and both like to speak English with us, which is a bonus for me as my French is still pretty basic!).

We arrive and the kids go off to see Sonia in the kitchen while we order a very welcome aperitif, and chat to Patrice.

“Can I show the girls our new additions please?” he says, and off the trot excitedly to see 3 gorgeouse 4 day old kittens and their mum.

“Can we have one, can we have one?” they scream, and I have to say I’m smitten too. But we already have 2 cats, we had to give up my beloved LaWoof last year (thanks for taking her in Suze!), and we were about to go on holiday.

“Ask your dad” I say – thinking for sure he’s going to say no – he’s not really an animal person, and he knows that as the girls only spend weekends with us, it’s going to be up to us to look after them.

“Yeah, why not” he says!!!

That’s when the bombshell is dropped – we can’t come back and get them in 6 weeks, if we want them we have to take them AND their mum TODAY!

So what started as a nice relaxed Sunday lunch turned into an adoption of stray cats and the buying of supplies – not easy in Northern France on a Sunday!

The kittens are now 6 weeks old and full of mischief, and it’s true that watching them can lighten the heaviest heart – but 3 kittens, 2 cats, a new baby, a business to run, a step family, an 18 year old daughter and a life in a foreign country might just be enough for now, don’t you think? Although I hear there’s a guinea pig that might need to be rehomed soon….

  4. Find a quiet, darkened room NOW, Nikki…

Do not come out until all such thoughts have been banished: You are already on the slippery slope and, unless you break the chain, there's only one way to go…

  5. There seems to be a kitten addiction among cat people, I have it too. You still adore your cat, who was a kitten once, but suddenly you realise you don't have a kitten any more and that way madness lies. But it does sound as though your hands might be as full as they can get just now. Step away from the guinea pig…
