Is There REALLY a New Way to Burn Fat Quickly?

Or are we just really, really gullible?

I was looking up solar plexus this morning (don’t ask). I Googled it and one of the sites had an advert on it: “1 tip for a flat belly”. Now I’ve seen this advert or variants of it around before. This time I decided to click on it and see where it took me. pear on a diet

This particular one takes you to a site that looks pukka: Telegraph online, BBC and CNN logos all prominently displayed. And there’s an Investigative journalist who’s looked into this on our behalf, no less!

She tells of a lady who is reported to have lost 3.5 stone in three months using this combination of a specific green tea and a colon cleansing product – you can see the before an after photo of her!

We get the claims of all the benefits that are reported on the supplier’s website listed for us, too. But even this isn’t good enough for our intrepid reporter – oh no, she’s getting married in a month, wants to lose weight, is prepared to be a guinea pig on behalf of all of us and decides to try it out herself.

We then get the reporter’s week by week, blow by blow account of the weight she loses – with no other appreciable changes to diet or exercise – and, by the way, she’s sleeping better and more energised than she’s been for ages!

This site looks so believable you feel lucky to have stumbled across it – and, not only that, the free trial offer of is available for just another couple of days – how cool is that!

There are comments posted, mainly from females but a couple of blokes in there too – they’re all from yesterday so this must be breaking news on this site! I could add a comment but it would have to go into moderation and be reviewed first…

Ready for this bit?

I’m just pondering on whether to give this a punt when I scroll down to the TERMS AND CONDITIONS which, by the way are printed reversed out (white on black) which is harder to read than black on white.

And what’s this?

“This webpage is an advertisement. This page is a fictious (their typo not mine) demonstration of what an individual who uses the advertised products could potentially experience.”

Then they get really sloppy: The same excerpt from the Terms and Conditions of the Supplier’s site is duplicated. So you get 2 chances to see that you’d better be quick to cancel as soon as they ship you your free trial because they’re gonna send you a month’s worth at the same time that they’ll bill you for, and continue to bill you each month till you do cancel.

And just in case you’re still not sure whether these people think you have MUG written on your forehead – when you click through to the supplier’s site, right at the bottom, under all the testimonials and photos of smiling ladies who’ve lost varying amounts of weight – in small print:
“All individuals featured on website have been remunerated and have signed standard legal endorsement release forms. (Available upon request)

My big questions

If this stuff is so good, why not use real people?
If this stuff is so good, why do they have to pay them to say good things about it?
Or do they just think we’re really, really gullible?

Have you tried any of these ‘formulas’ how have they worked for you?

  2. I suppose it's all our own fault in the end, Linda – we believe what we want to believe. If only I could lose just the weight of all the diet books and articles I've read – and some of which I've followed religiously (and I don't just mean on Sundays)

  3. There are always those that buy from the quick rich schemes and there are always those that will part with money for dieting advice, the get thin quick schemes. The thing is, it took us time to get overweight and it will take time to come off, and most of us are not patient.

These wise words are brought to you by the woman who drinks diet drinks in order to save the calories for Mars Bars, so far she is entitled to 23, 567 Mars bars

  4. Good comparison, Ann ;-) ! The only 'easy' way I've come across so far is The Easy Way To Stop Smoking by Allen Carr. I found that worked when I followed his instructions to the letter.

Do I suppose if I was serious about a weight loss issue I'd be inclined to look at his book on kit (haven't so far so can't comment).

  6. Interesting blog Linda, Indeed if it is that Good why not use real people and better still why pay them?

I got a call recently about an implement that can help with weight loss if I part with £120!

  7. The ONE easy way to lose weight you can rely on: burn more calories than you eat!

It's a good spot Linda – and there'll be a mass of folks who will order without a second glance at the terms, because we're all a bit weak when it comes to dieting and wish for something quick and easy.

I never fall for such nonsense…. Sarah, if you've earned the Mars Bars, does that mean they are now calorie free? If so, can I have one pleeeeeease….

  9. The first line of your comment more or less nails it, Elaine – add in a bit of exercise for toning and that's pretty well it.

I guess these adverts play on our miracle cure, 'pay for it' rather than 'work for it' desires. And as long as we have them, there are those who'll feed them (okay, even I groaned at that one).

    Back to mixed doubles tennis…
