Continuing with my special Christmas mini series – ‘Make Your Own Handmade Christmas Decorations And Gifts‘ this week we are you looking at some last minute handmade Christmas gift suggestions.
Well here are some ideas, for something a little bit different!
In the spirit of Christmas, how about making a gifts set of handmade gift vouchers, with things like -
- I will babysit for an evening
- I will treat you to a coffee when we go out next
- I will do your ironing
- I will help you sort out your garden for spring

A gift filled with sweet goodies for your friends to enjoy during Christmas week
For easy to follow instructions and free template download, pop on over to the rather fab Mini–eco blog – Christmas cracker templates
There are 2 templates; one to use as crackers for a dinner party etc.. and one to use as mini decorations.
If you make Christmas crackers, you will need some excellent jokes to give everyone a giggle
I recommend the excellent ‘English Language Joke book’ by Suze for just $3.95 I will be adding some to my homemade crackers!

Edible gifts – mini muffins and caramels
How about making a set of mini cakes or sweets, wrapped in a lovely box.
Mini muffins gift
For an eco-friendly suggestion a project by Kelli from the ‘Random thoughts by a supermom’ blog, has a lovely suggestion of decorating an egg box and adding homemade mini muffins.
Christmas box with caramels
Melissa shows you how to make a Christmas box, printing a template onto cardboard and using Christmas wrapping paper to decorate the box. She also includes a recipe for caramels to include in your gift box

Print a cute owl calendar
From the delightful My Owl Barn, you can print a lovely 2012 calendar, with owl illustrations, for free. You choose the images that you would like for each month, and then it will be made into a pdf for you to download and print.
-
A special memory picture for your friends
If you have some photos of a special day out with your friends, print them out, and add to a decorated photo frame. Add a special note of why you enjoyed that day so much, and thank them for their friendship.
Here is a suggestion for decorating a photo frame by Mahola
If you don’t have a glue gun, other strong glue would be fine to use, you can also use stickers and Christmas paper to decorate it.

Thanks for recommending “The English Language Joke Book” Anita – there are hundreds of jokes in there to share at festive parties – all (or most!) suitable for a family audience! And I love your idea of the personal/time gift vouchers. I am about to go and suggest some of those to my son…..

I make personalised crackers for the family every year. I start by collecting the insides of toilet rolls from about October, then lay two of them end-to-end for each person, with all sorts of bespoke bits and pieces inside.
I giftwrap them (metallic paper is best), twist the ends, tie with bows of gift ribbon, curl the ribbon with (blunt) scissors, and finally perforate the ‘tear’ with a scapel point and stick a label on to show who each cracker is for.
In previous years I’ve included things like:
- jokes
- quizzes
- jigsaw pieces
- indoor sparklers
- sweets
- scratchcards
- treasure hunt clues
- wine charms
- keyrings
- party poppers
The only downside is that you have to twist and pull to open them, and shout BANG at the same time.
P.S. I can’t tell you what I’m doing this year, or it will spoil the surprise!
