Initiation as a newbie into any group can be tough – unless you have the hide of a rhinoceros – so I’m delighted (but not surprised) to see friends and acquaintances already here.
Bit of Background How
Back in 2005 I set myself up as an independent trainer and guide to help small (mainly business to business) companies authentically win, keep and grow customers. My thinking was that transferring the key learnings of over 25 years’ experience working in sales and marketing communications for various industries and clients had to be able to provide a short cut for others who couldn’t and wouldn’t follow traditional ‘course’ routes…
It turned out that general consensus amongst clients was that the hardest part was getting new business in the first place. So that was by and large the start point: Who they were, how what they did helped their clients and how they were really different from others offering apparently similar products or services.
So far so good yet the next step was harder. Many would rather have a root canal at the dentist’s without anaesthetic than pick up the phone and make a call to someone they didn’t already know, even to discover what the market wanted and needed, let alone actually engage them in a potential business relationship.
So I decided to research this whole area of networking that some thought was absolutely brilliant and others believed was a complete waste of space.
That turned out to be a whole interesting diversion in itself. I hated the first terrestrially organised networking event I attended and it was very nearly my last
- we can maybe swap fun/embarrassing/successful networking stories and share advice on ‘do’s’ and ‘don’ts’ down the line.
For now, as one result, I first ‘met’ Sarah (the instigator of this site and in future referred to by me as “The Boss”) on an online networking club.
Bit of Background Why
What an experience that was! Like many others before and since, I soon discovered that she gets to know individuals and is a fierce and loyal protagonist for those she believes in, friend of those she builds trust with and is generosity itself in making introductions. She’s also a mean nagger once she gets the bit between her teeth… And that has a habit of putting people on the spot and making things happen – this site, for example
.
Anyone who gets involved with The Boss swiftly learns that a rallying call is designed to establish those of us who can either directly contribute to getting a specific task done or rack our brains to introduce someone else who’s better equipped to do it. And, if we really can’t help out on this particular occasion, it’s better to ‘fess up sooner rather than later and that’s okay, too.
That’s not a bad basis for any group of collaborating chums, is it?
In conclusion:
“Get on with it, Linda:”
The Boss is nagging me so okay, I will!
I believe this is a great place to be a part of and think 0000ff;">Nick is a super star sport for joining in. I can see I’m going to have to ration my time here or I’ll not get anything else done…
See you soon.

FWIW one of my colleagues says she doesn’t nag me. She performs the function of Deadlines and Diary Monitor.
Twitter: presentations
That’s an essential function Simon… your colleague sounds like our kind of reader

I have to agree with Linda, nagging is certainly one of Sarah’s superpowers
And good job on promoting painful dentistry too – I can already see the appeal of the root canal, if the only alternative is to pick up the phone and start to do something practical about sales and marketing…
Hi Ann – That’s not as bad as the one who referred to flaming darts in the eyes in preference to cold calling (honest – I kid you not) – he did sound a bit Victor Meldrew-ish – I wonder what happened to him and his business???

Just out of interest here Linda, is it called nagging when men do it? or just called nagging when women do it?
Now, go and write some more blogs…
Kev
I believe that when men do it it’s called helpful advice from the wisdom of their experience, Kev…
