Make Your Own Handmade Christmas Decorations And Gifts 2011 – Part One

As we are now in Advent, I thought it would be nice to look at suggestions for handmade decorations and gifts that you or your Christmas bauble © Nita Joy Designsfamily can make this Christmas.

Over the next few weeks, I will be adding a variety of handmade craft ideas for you to make at home that are easy and quick to make.

This week here are some suggestions for tree decorations –

  • Make an owl tree ornament

Jessica from ‘Juicy Bits’ blog shares with us a very cute owl decoration sewing project, which isn’t time consuming and is fun to make.

For instructions, pictures and free PDF you can visit and download  – Give a hoot for the holidays

  • Make dried fruit tree ornaments

Julianna from ‘The Letter 4’ Blog  has put together a set of easy instructions to make some lovely sparkly dried fruit pieces that you can hang from your tree. In her tutorial she suggests lemons, limes and oranges.

For instructions and pictures please visit – Dried fruit ornaments

  • Make paper Christmas tree ornaments

Susan from ‘The Pretty Blog’, shares with us how to make some very pretty tree decorations that are easy to make, but look like you have spent hours on them. She helpfully lists the materials needed with photographic instructions. There are 6 free printable designs to download, including –

    1. Blue Bambi pattern
    2. Reindeer pattern
    3. Snowflake pattern
    4. Music pattern
    5. Green pattern
    6. Christmas hat pattern

  • Make folksy heart cross stitch tree decorations

For just £1.49 you receive a pattern download through ‘The Making Spot’ website. This lovely pattern will help you make some cross stitch hearts for your tree, as designed by Angela Poole.

This pattern would make a lovely gift for a crafty friend. You could buy it, download and print, and send it as a Christmas gift this year.

  • Make an elegant bauble using a washing machine liquid soap ball

Yes, you did read that correctly :) you can make a lovely Christmas tree bauble using a liquid soap ball or another round object. I will be making some myself this year.

Follow this video for easy instructions -

  • Make tree decorations for outside

Robin from ‘Robin Becks Nest’ blog suggests that you make tree decorations for outside, that not only will be pretty to look at, but your garden birds and squirrels will also enjoy.

It’s a shame that in the UK we don’t experience the lovely humming birds that she talks about in her blog, but my suggestion is that you use the instructions as inspiration to create a tree perfect for where you live.

For instructions and pictures please visit – Outdoor Christmas tree for birds

For a bird seed mix decoration suggestion, make up a bird seed cake mix, lay Christmas cutter shapes on an old tin with baking parchment and put your mixture in each shape and allow the mixture to set. Leave a little hole area free of mix, so that you can put ribbon or string through it, to hang from your tree.

For a recipe suggestion I suggest a visit to Angela Callanan’s blog ‘Precious little Birdy

Gift suggestion:

Make one or two of these decorations, package them in a pretty box, and give as a gift to a friend or family member :) You could start a tradition and make decorations as gifts each year!

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

Well I hope these suggestions have got your creative juices flowing.

If you make some, let us know, we would love to see your photos!

  3. Hi Anita,

I was cracking my head for some easy to make Christmas decorations when I chanced upon your blog. I love the idea for making baubles – it is easy enough for someone who hasn’t had much experience in handcraft. The materials are easy to get hold of too:) Hope you will have a great time preparing for this coming Christmas!

  4. Some good ideas there, Anita. I am generally rubbish with anything involving paper – I like to use fabric or felt because I find it’s a bit more forgiving if you aren’t good at precise. A couple of years ago I made little felt stockings and mittens to hang on the tree – and popped some chocolate coins in them. I think I’m a bit too late and disorganised this year though.

  5. Hi Anita

Paper chains and glitter everywhere! ;-)

In my opinion it’s kids that make Christmas magic and special. As kids, when Christmas came close my big sisters and I (like most families we knew) would ‘help’ Mum make our own decorations. They may not have been as pretty as some you can buy nowadays but the fun we had making them was all part of the festivities and the build up to the Big Day.

I’m all for that and, with money scarce for many families, I’m guessing that’s one area of saving that could bring back a revival of creative ‘family’ time.

    • Hi Linda, thank you for your comment.

      Yes glitter everywhere ;)

I try and make a lot of handmade gifts for Christmas, as not only is it fun, but I also like to concentrate on the little things, rather than the materialist edge that often tries to take away the meaning of the season.

I have done a lot of youth work, putting together craft projects for toddlers right up to teenagers, so think it’s a part of me now. :)

  9. Hi Anita,

I always used to make Christmas decorations, but I’ve got out of the habit in recent years. I’d already decided to have a go and make some this year so thank you for these lovely ideas.

My eldest daughter made an origami Christmas tree when she was much younger, and this still comes out every year :-) I also have all the childrens’ decorations they made in primary school etc :-)

    • Hi Angela,

Thanks so much for your comment :)

I really think that setting a bit of time aside to make a few items for Christmas really adds to the enjoyment of the season. That is why I encourage it.

      The origami tree sounds lovely.

It is nice to have a tradition bringing out treasured ornaments and decorations each year, I think it makes it extra special!
