'We' had two out of three at home; no gas, drugs or hypno. Midwife was a bit late for the third but, by then, I was a good sub.

And also, Suze, if we were in the USA, we'd find some of the cost (if not all) would not be covered by insurance. I know of a lady whose baby's birth was covered by insurance, but not the epidural she needed - it was not deemed "essential", so she had to fork out $1,000+ of her own for that inessential item.

Do those of us having babies in western countries actually understand just how damned lucky we are to have these birthing choices - many of them FOC? I still look back on my son's arrival with wonderment - despite his arriving via emergency C-section - and think what might have resulted had I been in a country where modern facilities were not available, as it is for millions of women in the developing world.

Interesting you mention privacy Claire, my gran used to tell me privacy went out of the window the day you gave birth and didn't come back until the kids grew up and left home. I wondered what she meant, but found out that mothers giving birth are deemed public property in many hospitals!

All my girls where hospital births, the eldest at a leading maternity hospital was the worst and our local hospital which is regularly slammed for poor performance were great for the younger two.

It never crossed my mind that this was something that I would want to do at home, and I am glad I didn't.

Glad to hear such a positive experience of the hypno-therapy

I too had a home waterbirth (with my first child) and it was the most amazing experience ever. You can read about it her http://www.thenappylady.co.uk/public/articledet....

It saddens me deeply that so many births are traumatic, especially when so many of them don't need to be. Giving birth should be a wonderful, empowering experience, and I'm glad this one was for you.

Lovely account of your home birth experience, Claire :-) I had all three of my children at home (I didn't try hypnobirthing though) and had three very quick, easy, happy, memorable, drug-free labours and births. It's a great pity that more women with problem free pregnancies don't feel that home birth is an option for them. I was lucky to have a GP and midwife who were both very supportive of my wishes, but I know that's not always the case.
