I know of a lady whose baby's birth was covered by insurance, but not the epidural she needed - it was not deemed "essential", so she had to fork out $1,000+ of her own for that inessential item. I still look back on my son's arrival with wonderment - despite his arriving via emergency C-section - and think what might have resulted had I been in a country where modern facilities were not available, as it is for millions of women in the developing world. It's a great pity that more women with problem free pregnancies don't feel that home birth is an option for them. I was lucky to have a GP and midwife who were both very supportive of my wishes, but I know that's not always the case.
