Its all just Networking – so lets help each other out!
I’m putting together a twitter workshop at the moment, and one of the tasks I’ve set myself is to find out how other people use twitter. Of course, the way I did this is to write a set of questions and ask my friends on twitter to answer them. This is called CrowdSourcing.
I’ve done a lot of crowdsourcing on twitter recently, here are some of the things I have found out: What people think of when they hear the word ‘Architect’ http://www.justpractising.com/whatgoodarchitectsdo/poll-results-architect/
Which Netbook I should buy? What kind of party I should organize for my son’s 5th birthday? Where I should rent a party tent for the entertainer I chose http://rentapartytent.co.uk/ What is the best restaurant in Chelmsford for a business lunch?
The funny thing is, when I started using twitter I had no idea that I could use it that way. I was thinking that it might be a useful tool to tell people about our architects practice. But before long I was watching out for people’s questions – scanning the stream of thoughts, opinion and promotion, looking for people asking for help. I’m naturally a helpful person, sometimes to excess! So twitter has become my helpful home. The advantage of this is that my helpfulness has brought out the helpfulness of others.
When on 30 December I asked about what netbook I should buy, I was helped out by 31 people who took the time to give me their views, links to offers, phone numbers of contacts and so on. The party tent firm are based in Ipswich. They rang me up after my phone number (which is helpfully visible on my twitter profile) was passed to them by a friend of a friend at a networking meeting in Harlow who had read my request on a business networking site who had picked it up from twitter. It took 3 days before they rang but no matter, they were perfect, and finding them cost me nothing. As for my twitter workshop survey, I’ve had about 20 responses so far and some really interesting ones too. I’ve found out, for example, that some of my friends on twitter work for large construction companies.
Now I know why they were following me – or was it my Fish Pie recipe? Maybe I should ask them… For me, this is what networking is about, and using the internet to do it makes so much sense. It saves time and money, I don’t have to get out of the door at 6.30 am or come home at 10pm, and you get a warm feeling inside every time you can help someone along.

I asked a question on twitter about accommodation in London and have had some great answers!
Funnily enough, Facebook also gave me some good responses too!

I saw the responses Lynn, and I think it’s great how people respond with tips and good places to go

I’m barely getting into Twitter, always a late starter, me – but like Lynn I find Facebook useful.
As an information junkie, I find both are great places to find links on my subjects of interest, and I’ve made connections with other writers and discovered new magazines and competitions, for example.
I hadn’t ever considered the crowdsourcing idea though, so thanks for some clear examples, Su
