In the course of my work I research some unusual topics via the trusty Google, and one which I thought might be of interest here on BOTB was the subject of interesting hobbies.
Far from your stereotyped knitting, needlepoint or even – for the more daring – rug hooking, I was thinking more along the lines of dog fighting or even dogging, but then of course those are hardly unusual. Ah well, back to Google.
Then I happened upon a lovely if slightly confusing site by author Ariion Kathleen Brindley in which she shares her thoughts on some hobbies that certainly seem a lot more creative and stimulating than most.
Take Duct Tape Art, for example. From this humble stuff young Melody Williams from Arkansas creates “shoes, clothes, jewelry, cards and sculptures—even a model of Shakespeare’s Globe theater (which later became a home for her pet turtle, Shelley).”
This artform is not without its perils, however. “Duct tape is very sticky,” Melody warns. “When I was making my skirt, I had a lot of problems with it sticking to itself in places it wasn’t supposed to.” Quick way to get yourself a Brazilian , though.
Other hobbies of note include Taphophilia – the enjoyment of cemeteries which Ariion kindly points out to us “should not be confused with necrophilia, which is a sexual attraction to corpses.” Oh, that’s OK then.
Following on from Handcuff Collecting (useful for the dogging sessions,) Beetle Fighting (tidier and more compact than dog fighting,) Carving Eggshells (not for fumblers with morning-after shakes) there is, of course, Javelin Catching – “the latest danger sport that combines the thrills of an extreme outdoor activity with the satisfaction of a well caught spear. Javelin Catching is the perfect blend of adrenalin, danger and extreme sports. It combines dexterity with skill and fast reflexes. Above all, Javelin Catching raises awareness of safety in sport by making participants highly aware of the dangers involved (e.g. Dismemberment, Death, Injury In Many Forms)”
Is awareness of safety raised before or after participants experience dismemberment, death, castration, etc., I wonder? Thankfully Ariion gallops to the rescue – “**WARNING** Don’t even think about trying this. It can be deadly.”
Finally I enjoyed learning about Noodling. Far from being about making your own pasta, this one involves “fishing with your hands. A noodler feels around the snake infested water with his hands and feet for a large hole. Then usually goes underwater to ram their fist down a catfish’s throat. The catfish (the largest of which can be 50-70 lbs.), will latch on to the fisherman’s hand, trying to protect its comfy home. The noodler then has the task of dragging their catch (still latched onto their arm) out of the water and either onto shore, or into a boat.”
Think I’ll stick with getting my fresh fish from the counter at Tesco’s. And suddenly knitting doesn’t seem so uncool after all. Read the full story here

I loved the Noodling too … but the weirdest one for me is the Duct Tape Art … I wonder if she has tried making shorts and bikini briefs? Ouch…

What a giggle! Great post Suzan!
Rather fancy the idea of the Duct Tape Art with a Brazilian on the side (but only if I can select age, gender etc?), not least because I can supply myself (and others) with the duct tape.
And you may be surprised to know that I might be able to help with the dogging too. We have a product called a dogging device on topdiy.co.uk – it’s under the Architectural Ironmongery section…
Hmmm, gotta watch out for those architects and their hobbies then, eh, Su?

I agree with you and think that a hobby can really make a difference in a person’s life. My latest hobby is making knives. The metal the wood together give knife making a very organic feel in a hobby. The designs and styles are unlimited so every hobby has its own advantages but as for me I like to make knives!
