Personal violation, Robbery, Theft and Larceny

I know I am not the first, and I am definitely not the last but earlier this week I was the victim of a robbery. The house I was staying in was burgled.

An ingenious entry – gemming off a sliding patio door and forcing open the window.

This happened whilst the house was empty and we were out at dinner. Now for whatever reason and foresight; I had with me [in my bag / briefcase] my most important personal effects like my PHONE and NETBOOK so the intruder only took my chargers. At the same time they stole my favourite perfume [a full bottle], a silver pill box with some great pills in it and some cash [£3.60 actually].

Not a lot really – more of an inconvenience*

However, if you’ve been victim to this you’ll understand, it’s the feeling that someone has gone through all your personal effects, looking at, rifling through your drawers and generally making you feel spooked and somehow unclean.

That night I couldn’t get to sleep as it was too late to make the house secure and I was convinced that the robbers, knowing I had a phone and laptop, would reappear and steal again.

Horrible feeling.

And then more inconvenience. I was away from home, working, checking emails, doing some social media marketing and responding to a quote …. When of course there’s no juice in the laptop and I can no longer access, correspond and do what I want. Blooming annoyed I am now.

Followed by police reports, paper work and insurance matters. It all takes so much time, and nothing really is going to be achieved, is it?

So, why are there more robberies and thefts now? An article in the Telegraph last year indicated that there was a rise in domestic burglary. Is it related to unemployment or immigration? Or is it just that it can be easy pickings to rob homes?

What’s the difference between theft, robbery and burglary? Did you know that larceny is often synonymous with theft and not always covered by insurance?

I feel pretty flat now, not so sure I am emotionally disturbed now I am home but certainly I feel a bit anxious. Luckily I’ve been able to replace the chargers and perfume promptly [ebay and Amazon are great for bargains] and I am almost back to normal.

Support victims and punish the perpetrators, thieves and wrong doers.

How will this new government deal with rising crime and over stretched police resources?

if* If you  have sent me a text to my phone recently – please add your name at the end as until I can put my sim back in my phone I am using an old Nokia which doesn’t recognise my address book – or maybe my address book isn’t on the sim – either way I have no idea who is texting me at the moment – so apologies

PS: I am fund-raising for British Heart Foundation, doing the Heart of Sussex walk. If you feel like sponsoring me, it’s a very worthy cause and I would very much appreciate it. Thank you.
