As I checked my messages online before going to bed, I saw the headlines ‘Whitney Houston dead’ I really had to think for a moment, wondering if I had misread it, but sadly no… it was true, Whitney has died, the cause is unknown.
Whitney was only 48 years old, far too young.
As the news filters online, discussed at great length on various social media platforms and entertainment news, it really makes me sad that she was found dead in a hotel, on her own. What a sad ending to a life that made an such an impact in many ways.
Whitney had such an amazing talent; which unfortunately was overshadowed in her last few turbulent years, as she struggled with enormous pain in her life, causing her to lean on alcohol and drugs.
I hope she will be remembered for her voice and how she made a positive influence in the world; not only was she the top selling female artist of the 20th Century, but she also became the first black women to appear on the front of a teenage magazine ‘Just Seventeen‘ and MTV.
Whitney’s musical background began in Gospel music, her mum is a talented Gospel singer Cissy Houston, whose cousin is Dionne Warwick. Music was very much a love in Whitney’s family.
She appeared in a number of movies, most famously for her role in the ‘Bodyguard’ opposite Kevin Costner, as her song ‘I will always love you’ captured the hearts of many. One of my favourite movies that she was in was the ‘Preachers Wife’, a story of finding hope when life had become so hard for a family overwhelmed with the problems facing their community, the soundtrack for the film is one of the top selling Gospel albums of all time.
Through her singing career she won 6 Grammys and many other awards! Her talent inspired many such as Mariah Carey and Christine Aguilera and paved the way for artists such as Mary J Blige. I have always wanted to see her in concert, because she had a voice that just made you sit up and listen, she brought amazing emotion into her songs, that you just couldn’t ignore.
Some of my favourite songs are -
As we read various tributes, one thing that is clear, some of those interviewed so far have said, ‘shame I wasn’t able to tell her how special she was to me…’ If we can learn anything from this, is that don’t wait until tomorrow, tell the people you love, how much they mean to you today …
My thoughts are with her family at this terrible time for them.
Thank you for the music Whitney!

I cannnot believe it myself, what a tragic waste and so young.

I can’t quite believe this sad news either. Whitney was an icon, inspirational and had a truly remarkable voice that haunts many a tune. Such a tragedy if it was the drugs that meant she lost her life.

Hi Lynn,
Thank you for your comment. It still hasn’t quite sunk in, I have been listening to the Preachers Wife, one of my favourite albums that Whitney recorded today.

So sad. She had the most agile voice I think I’ve ever heard – so has Mariah Carey, but the latter’s has nothing like the depth or gravitas that Whitney’s had. A terrible shame.

She done amazing justice to Dolly Parton’s “I will always love you”, made it her own. How sad for her family

Whitney Houston was a real inspiration to me when I was growing up. I feel really sad for her that her life went the way it did. Artistic genius is so often a two-edged sword – so close to madness. I hope she is at peace now.

Such a sad loss. We’ve all heard and sung a long to one of her songs whether it be in the car, at a party… wherever. Thoughts are with her family. RIP Whitney

I will always love you came out when my daughter was just a toddler. The first time she heard it on the radio, she stopped what she was doing and just sat there, mesmerised. And it happened every time thereafter. It was fascinating to watch.
Whitney provided the soundtrack to a large section of my life – from her early beginnings with Saving All My Love For You through So Emotional to One Moment In Time. I remember seeing her performing live in London, it was so amazing to hear one small woman with such an amazingly beautiful and strong voice. She could send shivers down my spine, effortlessly hitting the the big notes and changing the key to bring forth tears of sheer emotion.
And yet, as is so often the case with such gifted performers, her personal life was a mess of insecurity and addiction.
Or is it just that so many of our generation suffer from such problems and percentage-wise that means that it has to affect some celebs too?
If people with her wealth and access to help cannot beat those problems, what hope for the lesser folk, who die unnoticed?
So sad.
