Businesses are constantly trying to keep up with technology trends to stay afloat, but many do not realize that this same trick can be used when trying to keep a relationship afloat. Communication is absolutely necessary in business and it is absolutely necessary in a relationship. This makes technology very important when it comes to finding those connections with the ones who matter most. It works with clients and customers, so why can’t it work with the love of your life?
If you are or have ever been in a long distance relationship, you know that there are many struggles that come from not being able to see your other half. One of the easiest ways to say connected is by talking every day. Fortunately for those dealing with this situation, there are technologies you can use to help make things a little bit easier and a little bit sweeter. Whether they were created for long distance love or not (most likely not…), they work. Are you using these technologies to their full potential?
How to Use Technology to Keep Long Distance Love Alive
• Consistent Email – Email is probably the least romantic way to talk with your significant other, so it’s important that the conversation centers around what you miss about each other or why you love each other. Emails that are full of complaints or worries simply won’t make either of you feel better, but this is unfortunately what happens because the technology can seem a bit distant. Email also works best when you know you cannot talk with your partner directly. In other words, they are not at their computer at a particular moment. Then when they get back to their emails, they will have a nice message waiting.
• Video Chat – This is probably the greatest technology to happen to long distance lovers. Video chat, known as VoIP phone systems, allows two people talk face to face through a computer screen in real time. The most popular video chat service is Skype, which is completely free and easy to use. This is essentially in any relationship dealing with physical separation because it brings in almost all the elements of being together.
• Social Media – This technology can work in two ways: One, it can let you show the world how you’re feeling about your partner. If you miss him, you can write it on his Facebook wall or Tweet it to his account. This will go a long way because he will know that everyone can see how you feel. Second, you can use social media to send private messages. This is similar to email, but could still be used as a surprise. If you’re using email and social media to send messages, it will help keep that spark alive. In general, email messages should be romantic, and social media messages can be whatever your heart desires.
• Instant Messaging – The reason this is sometimes preferable to video chat is because you can do other things while you instant message. There will always be times when you need to work on the computer or cook dinner, but it’s nice to know that your partner is available whenever you want to talk because instant messaging is in real time. It’s easy to multi-task when instant messaging, but it simply doesn’t work when you’re talking on the phone or video chatting.
Although many couples understand that there are many forms of online communication available, few actually take advantage of them all. Using all of the different mediums is a great way to keep things more exciting and less like a chore. It’s almost important to keep in mind the subject matter of your conversations. You want to make sure that you discuss typical things such as household finances or your careers, but it’s important you always make time to tell each other how much you miss the other person. This is made easier through technology, so take advantage!

I once had a long distance relationship and communication through the aid of technology helped us a lot. The relationship just didn’t work but it has nothing to do with communication since the advent of technology has pave its way to achieve success.
Thanks for sharing and inspiring others.

Oh they work a treat Sarah, I’ve used all of the above!
The one which I have found crucial is Skype with video – especially if you have met someone online and haven’t yet met in person. Being able to see the person you are relating with will give you a much fuller picture of who they are before you fall head over heels in love with them purely based on the words they share in emails.
In more established relationships, the possibilities are endless and for those not used to online activities, it’s time to get a bit more savvy and start enjoying yourself and your relationship – long distance or not

I could not agree more. Skype is my favorite, and it’s completely free. You don’t have to worry about coming across in the wrong way because you’re right there face to face. Thanks for reading!
