Web design v web development – do you need them both?

To get the most out of your website I would recommend using both a web designer and a web developer. A lot of people say they do both but their expertise usually lies in one area, for me my expertise is design.

I have a knowledge of building a website, SEO, CMS and of course know how best to navigate through a site and get the best out of a users experience but even though it is paramount that I have this knowledge I stick to the design side of things and apply my experience to create bespoke web designs for each of my clients.

I work closely with a web developer who takes my design and works the back end magic to bring my design alive on screen. The web developer, by his own admission, is not as strong at the graphic and design side of things, therefore would prefer to stick to his area of expertise and concentrate on the build and all the wizardry that people don’t always see.

What you get as an end result is the combined experience and knowledge of a designer and a developer, specialists in their area to create a website that achieves everything you want, not only does it aesthetically look the part but it is built to work for you and your users for an all round ultimate experience.

So will you pay twice as much because you’re using twice as many people? The short answer is no, both people work on their specialist areas and get the job done, the time they quote for is how long the graphics and design would take and how long the build would take, this would be the same, if not longer for one person to do. You’re also benefiting from a collaborative team pulling their ideas and knowledge together, which is always a good way to work to get the best end result.

Think of it like building a house, you would get the architect to draw up the plans, who would then hand them over to the builder to build. Both these people need to work closely so that everything works as it should do and any potential problems can be overcome.

In summary, if you can use two people for the price of one who have the expertise in their individual fields, then why wouldn’t you?
