First of all a confession, I’m in lurve with my new iPod Touch… actually its an upgrade from my old iPod, but what a fantastic gadget; music has never been so easy or enjoyable to access and listen to. It may sound odd, but it’s um, well, sexy!
Anyway, I listen to it often – in the gym, driving, shopping… and it struck me the other day as I was driving through open countryside in glorious sunshine singing along at the top of my voice (no-one else in the car to hear my off-key shrieking), just how much my current faves say about me. Are you the same?
To demonstrate My current Top 5 is below:
1. Pink – Bad Influence
2. Muse – Undisclosed Desires
3. Lady GaGa – Bad Romance
4. Paloma Faith – Do You Want The Truth Or Something Beautiful
5. Black Eyed Peas – Meet Me Half Way
I know one of the things this list shows, is that I’m still unashamedly a pop tart, despite my years!
I keep up to date with current charts – and have to say the pop music around at the moment is fantastic, so many artists I love to listen to – I still go to gigs regularly and am something of a lyric hound. I always have been. Of course I recognise I can’t keep that going forever; I can cope while it’s just a mutton and lamb issue, but when it becomes a case of who’s the old goat in the ‘in your face t-shirt’ I’ll probably have to retire:/Maybe all that says I am still trying to hang on to some yoof.
What else. Well they’re all very upbeat at the moment, so a reflection of my positive mood and the near onset of spring. The lyrics to some of them are cheeky, mischievous and fun – and there’s a great twist of cynicism in a couple of the tracks that really appeals to me.
My Top 5 changes regularly and can be very different – an angst ridden ditty by Lucinda Williams called Those Three Days is hovering just below these 5, that one throws the cat amongst the pigeons;) But for now, I would conclude that my music currently says I am a a positive, mischievous, cynical old goat with a sense of fun, going through a mid life crisis:/
How about you?

I’m often accused of hanging on to my “youf” when I go to watch my son’s band play and bop around to the music (albeit at a safe distance from the “mosh pit”) … but I’m now getting SO old that I don’t care!
I don’t have a personal music system in my ear holes but listen on whatever bit of hardware is handy, assuming the music isn’t live. And if you want eclectic, here’s my top 5 ….
1. Heart Of A Coward – heavy metal, son Tom is the drummer … http://www.myspace.com/heartofacoward
2. Jacqui Dankworth – daughter of the late Sir John, jazz singer extraordinaire and also a friend and neighbour … http://www.jacquidankworth.com
3. Various by Handel and Bach, played – beautifully -live on a Clavanova by our lodger
4. Most 1970s R&B and soul

Today I’ve mostly been listening to Tom McRae and Newton Faulkner…
But last week, when my brother was staying, and he and my husband were playing noisy computer games with really annoying sound effects…I put on Peter Gabriel’s Sledgehammer at top volume.
It worked surprisingly well
You used a sledgehammer to crack a nut… aaaargh sorry couldn’t resist.
Had a quick listen to Mcrae – interesting probs closest I get to that is Damien Rice, who is fab.
Very chilled…

Mine would identify me as someone with multiple personality disorder! An eclectic mix of Michael Buble, Rachmaninov, Genesis, Tchaikovsky and Mahler …

Do you like me get up early on New year’s day to catch the concert from Vienna?
Twitter: ethnicsupplies
Oh you put me to shame…
Must calm down and ‘do’ more classical;) Actually I went to my first concert last year – Birmingham Philharmonic Orchestra performing Mozart and Chopin – and loved it.
So I reckon you’re a very tasteful and refined MPD sufferer…
Birmimgham Philharmonic Orchestra?? I played with them for about ten years until disability stopped me a couple of years ago! What a coincidence.
Erm, no, I can’t stand Viennese music I’m afraid! It’s a bit tedious for second violin players (who don’t get to play the lovely tunes, just the um cha cha accompaniment).

Wow! More evidence of tasteful refinement;) Well BPO are absolutely superb so you have my admiration.

lately I have been listening to a lot of Moby, I have been feeling a bit Jason Bourne-ish so I have Extreme Ways as my ring tone.
After hearing KD Lang sing live at the opening of the Olympic games, she is higher up on my play list (she never really left it) along with Nelly Furtado.
Like Jane we play a lot of classical music too, and a Mozart compilation is doing the rounds at the moment.
Recently I discovered that my progressively, more frequent migraine attacks have a noise trigger – meaning less loud music (:-()
Aaah the wonderful KD Lang; seen her perform few times and she is sublime. Constant Craving is a fave; achingly good.
Shame about the migraine noise enforcement, but all in all I’d say your music says you’re pretty chilled and in control Sarah:)
Constant Craving is just perfect, and I had never heard her sing better till I heard her sing live. I never even realised she was Canadian!
Chilled, moi? hahahha I wish
More Canadian singers:
Joni Mitchell (from Calgary I think)
Celine Dion (Quebec)
Bryan Adams (born in my home town of Kingston, Ontario)
Avril Lavigne (born in Napanee, ON, 15 miles from my home town)
Michael Buble (Vancouver)
etc…

Interesting question Elaine. I like Jazz, the late Teddy Pendregast, Rick Braun, Four Play and Hugh Masekala being some of my favourites

Great for a Sunday morning I think:)
Jazzfm on Sky is fab on Sunday between 10 and 1PM and after 4PM

Okay: I’m an obvious pleb here:
Not classically trained; not guided to one type of music or another; not particularly wanting to be ‘hip’:
Melodies of tunes have always meant most to me – that and their impact on what was happening in MY life at the time – and that ‘s not changed in I don’t know how long.
I haven’t a clue and care less whether I’m listening to Mozart or Mahler, Streisand or The Stones, Motown or Jazz, California, Country or Folk. I draw my own line at heavy metal and rap because it misses the point to me – the melody.
‘Reason to believe’ and ‘Maggie Mae’ released as two sides of one record by Rod Stewart had a hard affect on me and my situation soon after I returned from abroad to the UK to live (though I was in the unknown sprawling city of London rather than Brighton, my home town).
To be honest though, it wasn’t just the melodies that sent me whirling around in my own world; the lyrics occasionally gave me pause to ponder:
“If I listened long enough to you…. I’d find a way to believe that it’s all true…”
…
Then there’s Cher, who you’d love or hate, but what a professional and WHAT a voice (she allegedly had nobody to follow in her time as no female sang in her deep range), and an actress to be reckoned with, but that’s going off course…
The ‘parking lot’ lady was interviewed within the last few months: Raspy voice; who-knows-how-many-cigarettes-a-day but: Janis – you’re still rocking;-)!
In case you’re wondering, I do take on board the younger, newer artistes that happen to fit my own bill, I just don’t remember their names so well these days – there’s a post on that somewhere here…
