Why You Need to Learn Microsoft Excel

Ever heard someone say, I don’t need training on… I have, many many times, especially on Microsoft Excel Advanced courses.  When I first started training I used to get nervous that the person would know more then I  did, but realised that the person who protests the loudest usually needs training the most.

I started out as self taught, so I know what it is like not to know everything software could do but knowing more then everyone else in the office and teaching myself more as I needed to. Then I started training and found out that I knew next to nothing, even with my Microsoft Office Users Expert Exams. There is a lot more to most programs then what a lot of us use in offices.

There is so much to Microsoft Excel that I could teach it’s features for more then two weeks, and I am still learning more all the time.  When a person working in an office uses Microsoft Excel they are using it in one capacity and usually thinking of it in a specific way.  For example Vlookups, quite a lot of people know how to use them, but do they know everything that it can do? Do they know how the parameters work or always put specific text in because that’s what they were told to do?

This means that we see a feature in a specific way, but by attending a good training course you can confirm what you do know and expand that knowledge with features that could save you more time in the future. The argument is that you don’t have time for training, you have so much work that taking one day out would set you back too much.  What happens when you would like a day off?  That argument usually does not hold you back. With training at least that one day could teach you ways to get your work done quicker and save you more then a day.

One Response to Why You Need to Learn Microsoft Excel

  1. I know very little about Excel beyond the fact that it is a very functional spreadsheet program, and I generally know more than most colleagues. I have often taught people the basics on how to use it, but am constantly frustrated when I find people entering figures rather than the formulae I've shown them how to use. Because the answer looks the same on the screen, they don't think there is any difference, and TOTALLY fail to appreciate that it removes its usefulness as a speadsheet.

If I ever wanted to get into PA/secretarial support, the very first thing I would do is get on a good training course.
